The Chairwoman's Challenge Trophy

The aim of this competition is to undertake a flight on a theme, which is set each year by the judges.

The Challenge in 2011 is taking a different format in order to encourage more people to take part. The aim is to broaden the experience of the participant in any one or all of three different ways:

  • By actively encouraging other women to experience recreational aviation
  • By experiencing different forms of general aviation
  • By visiting new/different places

As 2011 is the centenary of the issue of the first pilot’s licence to a British woman the BWPA is aiming to introduce more women to the pleasures of recreational aviation this year. One part of this year’s Challenge is to take non-flyers flying and extra weighting will be given to passengers who have not flown in a light aircraft before.

How many different forms of recreational aviation have you experienced to date? The second part of this year’s Challenge is to encourage participation in forms of aviation different to your usual mode of flying.

Lastly, the Challenge wants to encourage participants to visit different destinations as Pilot in Command or as PUT. Extra weighting will be given to landings at previously unvisited destinations with first-time landings at airfields abroad and off-airfield sites such as farm strips attracting the highest weighting.

The competition is open to any female member of the BWPA, including student pilots as the experience level of the participant will be taken into consideration by the judges.

The Rules:-

  • The flights may be undertaken at any time between May 1st and October 30th.
  • The participant may act as Pilot in Command, as PUT or, if experiencing a new form of recreational aviation without an instructor on board, as a Passenger. Participants acting as Pilot in Command may share the flying of a multi-sector flight with another pilot on a sector-by-sector basis.
  • In addition to the completion of the Challenge entry form the participant may be required to provide further evidence that the flights have taken place. When acting as Pilot in Command this may include flight plans/route plans, weather details, photographs, receipts for fuel/landing fees etc, and any other relevant documents. A copy of a signed logbook entry will be required for flights undertaken as PUT. A copy of the aircraft tech log entry or equivalent will be required for any flight for which the participant has been a Passenger. If landing at an unattended landing site, eg a farm strip or field, then a photograph that includes the aircraft and any passengers and identifies the landing site will be required.
  • Completed entry forms must be with the judges no later than November 7th 2011.

Certificates will be awarded for the most number of women flown and for the greatest number of different forms of aviation experienced and landing sites visited. A trophy will be awarded to the participant who, the opinion of the judges, has submitted the most diverse entry. The presentations will take place at the Christmas lunch.
